If you’ve ever thought ‘hey, being an architect sounds interesting’, then I have good news for you… after years of extensive research (studying and working in architecture), I have made a videogame about exactly that - and it’s called Canvas Street.
Canvas Street is a game about the joys, stresses, and everything in between of being an architect. You’ll have to design tiny homes for low income clients, and come up with creative solutions to their land space, budget, time, and circumstances (which can be changing).
Meet Clients
Canvas Street features a variety of different ‘clients’ - all who have unique needs, budgets, time frames, and circumstances. For example, someone might really want space for a cool kitchen. Or they might have a tight budget. Or maybe even be pregnant too!
Design their dream homes
Once the players meets their client and understands their needs, they’ll have to go through the ~architectural design process ~. This involves selecting from a variety of different floor shapes, walls, windows, doors, and furniture, to put together a design that fits the clients needs, while looking cool at the same time. Play in 2D (with a ‘plan view’), and preview how it’ll all look at any time in 3D!
Freak out as unforeseen (but potentially predictable) circumstances result in last minute redesign scrambles, as you fight against the pressures of time and budget!
Once the design is confirmed, construction will start. But things are never that simple when shovel hits soil, and things will inevitably go wrong. Materials will go out of stock, timelines will blowout, and life will happen to the client. When things do go wrong, the player will have to quickly redesign (while the clock is ticking), to make sure things stay on track for a happy client.
You’ll have to design carefully and solve problems quickly, to make sure your clients are happy with their new homes. Get designing, and good luck architect!
What is ‘Canvas Street’?
Canvas Street is a back alley in an inner city neighbourhood, with a variety of funky, small blocks of land that, in theory, could be used for small homes and apartments. There’s an opportunity here to create homes for people who need them, and bring life back into the alleyway.
As the architect, the player will design homes for people to live in Canvas Street. After each design and build is complete, the client will move into Canvas Street. Over time, Canvas Street will be filled with the new designs of the player, and the new residents of the street.
Project History
Canvas Street is the brain child of Leura Smith (Creative Director) and Katsumi Yoshida (Techical Director). After studying and working in architecture for a number of years, Leura wanted to stretch her creative fingers and make a game inspired by her architectural drawing style, and her experience of the occasional chaos while working in architecture.
She brought the idea to Katsumi, and he was keen to be involved. He loves all things code, especially shaders, and Canvas Street was an instant fit.
Together, we formed Apartment 809.
At the start of 2025, we received funding from Screen Australia Emerging Gamemakers Fund, to develop the prototype for Canvas Street. Later in the year, we received further funding from VicScreen Originate Games.
